Nearly two dozen teams arrived at Indian River High School this weekend for the Battle at the Beach, a wrestling tournament featuring some of the top athletes in the region. After putting together some impressive bouts and having several individuals surge toward the finals, the Indians finished 14th overall, and third out of the eight Delaware schools participating, in an effort that Indian River head coach Jeff Windish was happy with but one he hoped would help the team prepare even harder as the bulk of the schedule rolls around.

Chasing the dream

Two decades have come and gone since the Indian River varsity football team last had their shot at a state championship, and even longer — 23 years — since they came home with the trophy. But the Indians are rewriting history this year, and giving themselves another chance, after a comfortable 49-14 win over Howard last Friday, Nov. 25. The win, in the semifinals of the state tournament, has them positioned for the title, when they face Caravel at Delaware State University this Saturday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. for the State Division II championship.

IR punishes Central in Henlopen showdown, readies for state tourney

On Thursday night, Nov. 10, as Indian River prepared for the arrival of Sussex Central in a Henlopen Conference showdown between the Northern and Southern Division champions in the last game of the regular season, first-year head coach Ray Steele understood that there was not as much riding on the game for his Indians as there was for the Golden Knights. The 9-0 Indians had already sealed a top seed in the DIAA Division II state tournament bracket, regardless of the outcome.

A lopsided 48-0 win for Indian River over Seaford last Friday, Nov. 4, gave the Green-and-Gold a lock on the No. 1 spot in the Delaware Division II football standings. But before they head into the postseason tournament – with the highest ranking they’ve ever landed – the undefeated Indians were to face one more test, as they played host on Nov. 10 to Sussex Central, which has sealed the Henlopen North title for the past two years.

ALERT: Nationwide Emergency Alert System test set for 2 p.m. -- THIS IS ONLY A TEST

On Wednesday, Nov. 9, Delaware will join all other states in conducting the first nationwide Emergency Alert System (EAS) test. At 2 p.m., radio, television and cable stations will broadcast the familiar alert warning sound. Following the alert sound, the recorded message on broadcast media will state, “This is a test.” The audio message will be the same for both radio and television.
