The Delaware State Golf Association (DSGA) Amateur Championships came to Cripple Creek Country Club in Dagsboro these past two weeks, and with them, they brought a plethora of talent.

The women’s Amateur Championship drew to a close last week, with Christine Shimel of DuPont Country Club capturing the 2009 Flight 1 title with a 36-hole score of 222. Shimel shot a first- and second-round score of 72, which, at the time, was the new competitive course record for women. Worchester Prep prodigy Christina Vosters, who picked up the championship in the girls’ Philadelphia Junior Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour in the Rehoboth Beach series last week, grabbed the runner’s up spot in the amateur competition with a three-day score of 231.

Karen Sergison of Bear Trap Dunes Golf Club placed first in the Amateur Championship’s Flight 2 with a gross score of 248. Sue Bennett of Cripple Creek Country Club shot a net 228 for Flight 2’s top net score.

The men’s DSGA Amateur Championship finished up on Wednesday, with 36 players advancing past the cut in Rounds 1 and 2. The men’s four-day competition started Sunday, June 28. Chris Blades of Wild Quail Golf and Country Club was the low medalist in the Amateur Qualifier, but he had plenty of competition at Cripple Creek, with seven returning champions in the competition.

At the end of the day, Greg Wolfe, a member of Cavaliers Country Club, came out with the championship, shooting consistently all four days. He tallied 287, scoring a 72 par on the first, second and fourth days, and nailing one-under on the third day. Wolfe regained his composure on Day 4, as he found his footing and picked up three birdies after a double bogey on Hole 2. Justin Martinson finished one stroke behind, with 289 to secure runner’s up at the State Amateur Championship.

“We’ve been very fortunate with the weather,” said Cripple Creek golf pro and club manager Brian Trout. “We had a really good overall response, and the players seemed to appreciate every facet of being at the club. It was a great turnout.”

Each year, the DSGA Amateur Championship rotates around the state. They were hosted at Bayside in Selbyville several years ago. “This year is Cripple Creek’s 25th anniversary,” said DSGA Executive Director Bill Barrow, “and it’s great to bring everybody down here to this course. The staff here keeps the course in fabulous condition, and they really got things ready after all the rain we had earlier in the month.”

This was the first amateur championship held at Cripple Creek since 1998. For more information about Cripple Creek Golf and Country Club, call (302) 539-1446.
