River Soccer sign ups still under way until March 15

There’s still a chance to sign up for the outdoor spring recreational season at the River Soccer Club, with registration remaining open through Wednesday, March 15.

While registration is currently available online at www.riversoccerclub.com, the club will also feature walk-up registration on Wednesday, March 15, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the River Soccer Club Complex near Frankford.

Players ages 3-16 are eligible to sign up.

Smith, ECU softball off to 12-8 start after win over Seton Hall

Indian River High School graduate Karlie Smith is continuing production during her junior campaign for the East Carolina University softball team, recently helping the Pirates to a 15-14 win over Seton Hall.

The 3B went 2-3 in the recent March 5 matchup, tallying three RBIs during the game. Currently, “Karlie Clutch” is batting .278, with six doubles, eight RBIs and a home-run, through the first 20 games of the season.

Last season, as a sophomore, Smith led the Pirates with a .323 batting average.

ECU was set to face Youngstown State on Wednesday, March 8, (after Coastal Point press time), and James Madison on Saturday, March 11, at 1:30 p.m.

Shorebirds to host exhibition games with Salisbury University

With a little more than a month to go before the start of their 2017 season, the Delmarva Shorebirds announced this week their plans to get things under way with an exhibition game against Salisbury University on Tuesday, April 4.

The game between the Seagulls and the Baltimore Orioles’ Class A affiliate will be held at the newly renovated Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, Md., with a 6:05 p.m. game time.

“We look forward to another great start to the 2017 season. The exhibition game with Salisbury University will be a great experience for the players, staff and fans,” said Shorebirds General Manager Chris Bitters.

Tickets for the exhibition game will go on sale at www.theshorebirds.com starting March 20, at $3 for Upper Reserved seating.

Delmarva will get the regular season under way with their home opener against the Hagerstown Suns on Thursday, April 13.
