Foundation started for local boy injured by wave
On Wednesday, June 23, Indian River High School senior Justin Lowe was swimming in the surf off Ocean City, Md., when he was struck by a wave. He was thrown into a sandbar and fractured his neck.
Lowe was airlifted to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center and, as of Coastal Point press time, was still in the Intensive Care Unit, listed in critical condition.
The community has banded together since the accident to support and help Lowe and his family. Under hospital recommendation, his family is trying to send Lowe to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Ga. – a facility for spinal chord and brain rehabilitation, which boasts what is considered by many to be superior program for patients in Lowe’s age bracket.
However, because of the severity of Lowe’s condition, he is unable to be transported by ground vehicle to the facility. He must be flown there. The cost of his air transport is not covered under the family’s insurance plan; and it has been estimated that the cost will be more than $8,000.
Thus, the Justin Lowe Foundation has been created to raise money for Lowe’s transport and subsequent treatment. A benefit dinner was held on July 5, at $30 a ticket, to help raise the necessary funds. The event raised more than $1,000 toward those costs.
Lowe’s family is requesting privacy at this time, but donations may be sent to The Justin Lowe Foundation, c/o Bethel Tabernacle Church of God, 34180 Omar Road, Frankford, DE 19945.
