Frankford Public Library is now offering storytime in Spanish, or “en Español.” The story hour will be held the last Saturday of each month. This Saturday, April 26, they will be reading “Las Tres Javalinas,” or “the southwestern cousins of pigs.”

A group gathers round for storytime back in February. The Frankford Public Library has many resources for Spanish speakers and those interested in learning Spanish.
“Instead of the big bad wolf,” said Circulation Technician Rosa Mendez with a laugh, “They have the hungry coyote.”
This is the third month that Frankford has offered storytime in Spanish. Mendez is excited and said that it has something for everyone — both children and parents alike. Children ages 3 to 12, with their families, are welcome.
“It’s important. Even if the children speak English, the parents might not. We wanted to let Spanish-speaking people know that the library is here as a resource and that we have books in Spanish and that we are part of the community,” said Mendez.
“And for the English speakers, we want to let them know we have a lot of material here to help them learn Spanish. We have a wall full of CDs and books, and most people don’t know that.”
The library also offers bilingual Wellness Wednesdays for English and Spanish-speakers alike with Linda Leonard, MSLS, consumer health librarian for Sussex County. Last month, the library had a representative from the police force come to talk about the importance of wearing a helmet when riding a bike and other rules, as well as McGruff fingerprinting information for parents.
The Spanish story hour will run from 11 a.m. to noon at the Frankford Public Library on Saturday, April 26, and the last Saturday of every month thereafter.
“We also have books and magazines, and a lot of newspapers and other materials in Spanish,” said Mendez. “We want everybody to feel comfortable to come to our little library. We are a little library but we have a lot of activities!”
