Homes and hosts sought for Warrior Beach Week

Home owners are needed to volunteer their beach homes for a week of respite for soldiers and their families during the week of Sept. 3 through 8. A small group of local home owners calling itself DBR has been working with the USO-Metropolitan Washington office to coordinate a “Warrior Beach Week,” titled “Operation SEAs the Day.”

Their mission is to “organize and facilitate a beach-week event for our wounded soldiers and their families, as a means of showing support for their service and sacrifice,” in order to help ease their transition back to civilian life.

“We have been kicking it around and brainstorming,” said Dr. Richard Katon, one of the members of DBR. “And who wouldn’t want to do something like this for those that deserve it?”

They said that, to date, they have the support of the Town of Bethany Beach and the Bethany-Fenwick Area Chamber of Commerce, from VFW Post 7234 for a welcome reception and Resort Quest Management for a beach bonfire to be held during the week.

They are currently looking for home owners willing to donate the use of their homes for the week and also for greeters/hosts who will welcome the soldiers and their family to the homes for the week and to the area.

In addition, they are looking for housing for staff of the USO-Metropolitan Washington office.

“We are excited to be working on this project and look forward to putting it together,” said Diane Pohanka. “We welcome your inquiry and hope that you will join us in honoring our service members with this event.”
