“This will be the first time students have control of Homecoming with help from the Office of Alumni Associations,” said Fitzhugh, who heard about the chance to help plan the event through the university’s online news service. “I wanted to be involved with more on campus, and when I saw this chance to be on another executive board…”
Fitzhugh is one of 31 students who will serve on one of four sub-committees. More than 40 students from seven of the University’s colleges applied to sit on a committee to help plan the school’s October Homecoming festivities.
“I will be working on the Spirit Sub-Committee,” explained Fitzhugh. “We do everything dealing with Spirit Stations and other events on campus during Homecoming Week at UD, trying to get more students involved with the spirit of the UD Homecoming.”
Fitzhugh already keeps busy by volunteering his time to other organizations and staying active in the community.
“I am also on the Executive Board for UDance 2012. Our event raised $460,000 for the B+ Foundation, which helps fight against Childhood Cancer. I am in the process of applying to be the executive coordinator for UDance 2013.
“Off-campus, I am one of the newest coaches for the Indian River Indians football team as an intern coach,” he added. “I guess anything is service, no matter where you serve – be it on a Homecoming board for the 17,000-plus students, alumni, faculty and more, to going out of your comfort zone and helping those in need.”
Fitzhugh said he’s excited to be working for the next six months to make sure students, faculty and staff will show their Blue Hen spirit.
“I just hope that students at UD will become more into whatever we plan during Homecoming 2012 at the University of Delaware, to show their Blue Hen pride – nothing less than that, ever.”
