John “Jack” Aloysius Hanley Jr., 73

John “Jack” Aloysius Hanley Jr., 73, of Bethany Beach, Del., passed away peacefully at his home with family by his side on Tuesday, May 15, 2012.

Hanley was born Jan. 5, 1939, in Wilmington to the late John A. and Veronica (Conlin) Hanley. He graduated from St. Paul Catholic School, Salesanium School in 1956, and Drexel University with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering. He worked for over 30 years for the City of Wilmington Public Works Department as a civil engineer. He also co-owned the Hanley-Lisinski Company and Hanley-Lisinski Surveyors, land surveying businesses. Formerly of Hockessin, he retired to Bethany Beach in 2000. Hanley taught environmental resources classes at Delaware Technical & Community College and won the 2007 Water Operator of the Year award. He was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church and an avid Delaware Blue Hens football fan. He loved the beach, where he spent his retirement years with his children, grandchildren and extended family. He is remembered as a wonderful father, brother and grandfather who will be sorely missed.

Hanley is survived by his twin sons, John A. Hanley and wife, Yvonne, of Bethany Beach and James A. Hanley and wife, Sandra, of Wilmington; his daughter, Therese H. Alvarez and husband, Mark, of Scituate, Mass.; six grandchildren, Sarah, Andrew, Finn, Lilah, Mason and Thomas; and his sister, Letitia Ryan and husband, Philip, of Pocomoke City, Md.

A mass of Christian burial was scheduled for Saturday, May 19, at noon at St. Ann Catholic Church, 691 Garfield Parkway, Bethany Beach, Del. The family will greet friends at the church beginning at 11 a.m. Interment will be at a later date.
