John H. ‘Capt. Jack’ Evans, 87

John H. “Capt. Jack” Evans, 87, of Millville, Del., passed away Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008, in Atlantic General Hospital, Berlin, Md., after a short illness. He was a World War II Navy veteran and retired as a New York Harbor tugboat captain after 30 years. He was very proud to be a licensed private airplane pilot. He enjoyed working with his hands and in recent years had built and sold several utility trailers.

Evans was a member of the Doric Masonic Lodge in Millville, 32nd Degree Mason; Ocean View VFW; Dagsboro American Legion; past member of the Millville Fire Co., the Delmarva International Flying Farmers Association and was on the committee for the new Indian River Inlet Bridge.

Evans was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Anna Evans; his wife of 59 years, Betty Evans; and his sister, Thelma Taylor. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Carol Evans, of Dagsboro, Del.; his grandson and wife, J.S. and JoAnna Evans, of Frankford, Del.; two great-grandsons, John and Joel; a brother and sister-in-law, Allen and Marie Evans; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Frankford chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Thatcher St., Frankford, Del. A graveside service will be held Friday, Sept. 26, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the Millville Methodist Cemetery, Millville. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Seaside Christian Academy, 12637-A Ocean Gateway, Ocean City, MD 21842.
