Lambert: Senior 2B Madi McGee heads home toward some ecstatic teammates after her game-winning walk-off home run on Thursday, April 27.Before last Wednesday, Indian River High School senior and four-year softball standout Madi McGee had never hit a home run.

Less than 24 hours later, she had hit two.

After tallying her first career bomb in a 14-12 loss to Sussex Tech on Wednesday, April 26, McGee took the plate with the score tied 10-10 in the bottom of the seventh inning of a game with Milford on Thursday, April 27, and sent her second career shot over the fence for the 12-10 walk-off win.

The DelTech-bound 2B finished the day going 3-4 with three RBIs. Junior P/DH Marley Evans also homered in that game, adding two RBIs and a double as well, while seeing action in the circle to close down the game with a save.

Senior RF Sami Mumford went 3-4 with three RBIs in the matchup, two of her hits going for doubles, as the Indians improved to 7-4 on the season and took control of the Henlopen South division.

They’d go on to fall to 7-5 with a non-division loss to Sussex Central on Tuesday, May 2.

After going up 1-0 in that game on a sacrifice-RBI from senior shortstop Makenzie Collins that scored sophomore catcher Grace Snyder, the Golden Knights would put together a four-run fourth inning on their way to an eventual 8-2 victory.

Junior Taylor Evick homered for the Knights in the matchup, while the Indians struggled to string together hits against Central senior pitcher Hayley McCabe.

IR sophomore pitcher Nicole Patille struck out five batters in the loss.

After moving to 10-2 on the season, the Knights will gear up to take on Dover on Thursday, May 4, in a division matchup, while the Indians will travel to Woodbridge for a division matchup of their own on the same day.

The Indians currently lead the Henlopen South division, while the Knights sit one-game behind Sussex Tech.
