Police Beat -- Bethany Beach

DUI intervention becomes brawl

Bethany Beach police this week arrested a Pennsylvania man after reports of a fight on Atlantic Avenue, near Fourth Street, on May 29. Police said Jervis S. Marshall was being held on the ground by his brother when they arrived on the scene.

Officers said they then learned that Marshall was highly intoxicated and had allegedly been attempting to drive his vehicle back to Pennsylvania when his brother intervened and pulled him out of the vehicle. A brief struggle then ensued between the brothers, resulting in Marshall receiving a cut to the inside of his lip, police said.

Marshall was transported to Beebe Medical Center, where he was treated and released. He was charged with disorderly conduct and released on $250 unsecured bond.

Police arrest suspect in attempted murder

Bethany Beach police this week arrested a Maryland man who was wanted as a suspect in an attempted murder case in Baltimore, after a vehicle they spotted matched the description of the one the suspect had been seen driving.

Police said officers on May 28 noticed a tan Ford Mustang that matched the description the suspect’s vehicle. Officers then confirmed, through a registration inquiry, that the Mustang was, in fact, the vehicle that the suspect had been seen driving, and they performed a felony traffic stop on the vehicle.

While exiting his vehicle, police said, the suspect fled from officers. After a brief foot pursuit, Bethany officers were able to apprehend the suspect, Christopher L. Mumaw of Winsor Mill, Md., who was then transported to Sussex Correctional Institute, where he was to be held until extradition back to Maryland.
