Progress continues on library’s construction, fundraising and activities
The renovation and expansion of the South Coastal Library and Joshua M. Freeman Cultural Center is proceeding on a schedule that should allow for a “grand” reopening in the spring of 2009. Please drive by the Kent Avenue location to see the progress being made (for your safety, please do not enter the “fenced in” construction area). Also, there are current pictures of the construction activity posted on the library’s information board in Downtown Bethany, behind the lifeguard station on Garfield Parkway.
How fortunate all of us are to have such generous and supportive South Coastal constituents — individuals, businesses, local communities, governments, and foundations — that have provided donations of $2.13 million to date. While we are close to our $2.25 million goal — but we are not there yet!
Please continue your fantastic financial support by sending your donations, made payable to FOSCL-Capital Campaign, P.O. Box 1617, Bethany Beach, DE. 19930.
During the summer months, we continue to receive a steady stream of contributions, and, for that, we are very grateful. In addition, there have been several large donations from Wilmington Trust and The Delaware Community Foundation; the Towns of Bethany Beach and Ocean View have made payments toward their pledges and several other local banks (PNC, Wachovia and County Bank) have made pledge payments as well.
Also, there were three restaurant nights (Bethany Blues, Mancini’s and Warren’s Station). The owners of these restaurants provided donations of $2,500. These restaurant nights are special community events where our supporters come together for fun and food for the benefit of the Capital Campaign. Thanks to all who attended and to the generosity of the restaurant owners.
There are additional activities planned for the fall that will be lots of fun for those attending and provide needed funding for the Capital Campaign. These are:
• Restaurant nights — a portion of the evening’s sales are donated to the Capital Campaign: • Mickey’s Crabhouse at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18; Bethany Blues at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23; Sedona at 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7; and Matteo’s Salsa Loco at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 19.
• The Third Annual Harvest Ball will be held at the Baycenter at Ruddertowne in Dewey Beach. This year’s ball will be a “spectacular” celebration in honor of the success of the Capital Campaign and the planned reopening of the Library. There will be silent and live auctions, open bar, fine dining, and music and dancing to Mario Rocco Band. The “black-tie optional” ball will be held from 6 to 11 p.m. Tickets are limited and are priced at $150 per person with a table of eight at $1,200. For additional information, please call Karen Taylor on (302) 539-9452, e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org, or visit the FOSCL Web site at www.foscl.com. You may also preview some of the auction items on the Web site after Sept. 1.
During the Harvest Ball, a “rendering” of the Donor Recognition Wall will be on display. The “real” wall will be erected in the new library, and it will contain the names of those that contributed at least $1,000 to the Capital Campaign. There will be five categories of recognition, starting with Patron ($1,000 to $4,999); Partner ($5,000 to $9,999); Founder ($10,000 to $49,999); Community Partner ($50,000 to $124,999) and Community Leader ($125,000 and above). Donors who wish to remain anonymous should contact the Capital Campaign director, Mary Lou Tietz, at (302) 539-0793.
• A golf tournament will be sponsored by the South Coastal AARP Chapter to benefit the Library’s Capital Campaign. This event will be held at Cripple Creek Golf and Country Club on Friday, Oct. 3. It will include lunch, a scramble-best ball golf format, contests and lots of prizes. Activities begin at 10 a.m. with registration and a putting contest; lunch at 11 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Awards will be presented at the conclusion, with light refreshments and a cash bar. The price is $100 per golfer and information can be obtained from John Kent on (302) 537-5423. Look for flyers posted around town detailing the golf tournament.
Please plan on attending the Friends of the South Coastal Library’s annual meeting on Saturday, Sept. 27, at 10 a.m. at the Bethany Beach Town Hall. The election of officers and board of directors members will be held, and there will be a discussion of the new library facility.
Again, our sincere thanks to all that have supported the Capital Campaign. Continue to have an enjoyable summer!
