Deadline for Grise scholarship nears

The deadline to apply for the 14th annual Howard D. Grise Memorial Scholarship, sponsored by Preceptor Omega Beta Sigma Phi is April 15.

The Preceptor Omega Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi grants annually at least one Howard D. Grise Memorial Scholarship award of a minimum of $250 to a qualified high school graduate. The student must reside within the Indian River High School attendance area but may attend a different high school, such as Sussex Technical High School, private or charter school. To be eligible for consideration, each candidate should demonstrate his or her commitment to the community through volunteerism.

In addition each candidate must: (1) Complete the application, which may be obtained from Indian River High School or by calling 302-539-9581; (2) Answer completely and honestly all questions on the application; (3) Compose a one-typed-page essay stating his/her involvement in community service or volunteerism and the impact it has had on his/her life.

A completed application should be mailed to Diane Archut, 36219 Old Church Cemetery Rd., Frankford, DE 19945.

Women’s Club to award scholarships

The Lord Baltimore Women’s Club will award scholarships this year totaling $3,000 to Indian River High School graduating seniors. The scholarships will be awarded based on the following criteria:

• Acceptance to an accredited college or university;
• GPA;
• School and community activities; and
• A brief biography expounding on personal life, extracurricular activities and aspirations.

Applications are available at the high school in the guidance counselor’s office. The deadline for applications is April 19.

QRCF accepting scholarship apps

The Quiet Resorts Charitable Foundation (QRCF) is accepting applications for college scholarships. QRCF will award scholarships to local graduating seniors who reside in the towns of Fenwick Island, Bethany Beach, Ocean View, Millville, Clarksville, Selbyville, Frankford, Dagsboro, Millsboro and their surrounding rural areas. This area encompasses the ZIP codes of 19944, 19930, 19970, 19967, 19975, 19945, 19939 and 19966.

Two $8,000 scholarships will be awarded. In addition to one regular QRCF scholarship, the foundation will also award the Capt. William O. Murray Scholarship to a student who exhibits a strong commitment to civic and community service. Each recipient will be awarded $2,000 per year for four years. Both scholarships are based primarily on financial need but will be made available to other students if no qualified candidates apply.

“We believe that helping local students realize their college dreams benefits our entire community,” said QRCF President Diane Comolli. “And during this time of economic challenge, we are especially happy that we can provide additional support.”

The deadline to apply is April 16. Scholarship applications can be found on the QRCF’s Web site at www.qrcf.org.

Lions Club to award scholarships

The Fenwick Island Lions Club (FILC0 announced that they will be awarding the John Furlow four-year Scholarship in the amount of $4,000 to a qualified graduate of the Indian River High School. They are also awarding memorial scholarships including the annual Skip Higgins Memorial Scholarship of $1,000, Calvin Denis Memorial Scholarship of $1,000, and a Marion R. Dum Memorial Scholarship for $500.

The scholarships will be awarded on the following criteria:

(1) Show the need for financial aid.
(2) Have resided permanently in Sussex County, DE for at least the past 2 years.
(3) Have demonstrated a high level of achievement throughout high school.
(4) Complete an interview with the FILC Scholarship committee.

Applications are available at the Indian River High School’s guidance counselor’s office. Submission deadline to the Guidance Office is April 12, 2010.

Women’s Club awarding scholarships

The Women’s Club of the Keenwicks announces that they are awarding one $4,000 scholarship as well as other $1,000 scholarships to qualified seniors of Indian River High School. Last year, they awarded more scholarships than any other local non-profit organization.

Applications and scholarship information are available in the Guidance Office at Indian River High School. All completed applications must be submitted no later than April 12, 2010. The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony in May.

Member of the Women’s Club are residents of Keen-wik On the Bay, Keenwick West and Keenwick Sound.

AARP chapter offers scholarships for IRHS seniors

The South Coastal Delaware Chapter of AARP announced this week the availability of two $1,000 scholarships for Indian River High School seniors. The scholarships will be awarded in May.

Applicants must meet the following criteria: have at least a 3.0 GPA; have an after-high school goal that includes higher education; have been students at Indian River for their full junior and senior years; and write a short essay that explains how their high school, community and work activities have benefited them and how the school of their choice will help prepare them to meet their life’s goals.

“These scholarships are designed for a wide range of students who have a clear idea of what they want to do in the future,” said Scholarship Committee Chair Shirley Price. “Our chapter is delighted to offer these scholarships because we know how important young people are to the future of our community and nation.”

Complete application packets are available in the Indian River High School guidance office. The deadline for submission of application packets is April 26, 2010.

Contractors offer scholarship opportunity

Contractors For a Cause is offering a $1,000 scholarship to a local senior in high school who is interested in a career in the field of construction.

Interested applicants should prepare a 600-word essay on why he or she is worthy of consideration for the scholarship, and application forms are available at the school guidance offices. Applications and essays must be submitted by April 23.
