Tennis tournament aims to help Haiti earthquake victims
This weekend, Delaware State Tennis Pro Marty Godwin is inviting the public to get active and make a difference. On Saturday, Feb. 6, at 9 a.m., local tennis players are being invited to attend and support the “Hit for Haiti” tennis tournament at the Dauville Courts in Rehoboth Beach.
The suggested donation for the tournament is $15, with all proceeds being directed to the American Red Cross, in efforts to help those in Haiti who have been affected by last month’s devastating earthquake.
The tournament will operate as a flighted round-robin format, and Godwin’s Quickstart tennis program for young athletes will be on hand for a tennis exhibition. Players of all ages and experience are being encouraged to come out and support local tennis and those in need. Local businesses have donated items for a silent auction, as well, with funds going to the Red Cross.
“Tennis pros have a voice in the community,” said Godwin, “and we’ve raised money for a lot of charities. When something as tragic as the Haiti earthquake occurs, it shouldn’t be one we forget. It’s a must-do opportunity, and I say we get out there in the tennis community and do what we can. I’m really counting on people in the area to button up and come out and do it.”
The tournament is weather-permitting, and with this weekend’s chance of another wintry mix, the date for “Hit for Haiti” is subject to change. For more information about the event, including any postponements, contact Marty Godwin via www.martygodwintennis.com or by calling (302) 418-5000.
