In less than a month, the Bethany-Fenwick Chamber of Commerce will once again present Taste of Coastal Delaware, sponsored by NVHomes and Ryan Homes.

Returning faces will be sharing some of their best dishes, but plenty of newcomers to the event will be spreading their talent as well – including local legends at Warrens Station.

Owner Jeff Mumford has been carrying on the tradition of the Fenwick Island restaurant that’s over 40 years in the making.

“We specialize in local home-cooking,” said Jeff Mumford. “We cater to a lot of the young families and the retirees. People come in because we’re friendly, but our food is traditional and simple.”

With their coastal location in Fenwick Island, it’s no surprise that crab cuisines are a popular hit on the menu, but their primary dishes include a different component: turkey.

Back when the restaurant was first established, in 1960, the original owner raised turkeys, and ever since they have been the focus of many of the restaurant’s meals, from soups, sandwiches and salads. Warrens Station’s popular turkey salad is their feature in this year’s Taste of Coastal Delaware.

“It’s always a big hit,” said Scott Mumford, Jeff’s son, who has performed almost every role in the restaurant’s management, including the cooking. “It’s a favorite recipe that draws people back every year.”

Jeff Mumford added that they will be serving some of their fresh, homemade pies as well. “Our dessert pies are pretty popular,” he said.

Despite serving customers for nearly half a century, this will be the first year that Warren’s Station will partake in the annual event.

“We never had the resources or time,” said Jeff Mumford, though he’s optimistic of establishing a new demographic with the eager eaters that will attend Taste. “We’re looking forward to reaching a different clientele.

“Everyone who comes down in the summer knows the place because they drive by it. We want to show others what we have, too. People who live out in the Millville [and surrounding] area don’t always venture down the highway due to traffic. This way, we can show more people what we offer.”
