Alice H. Mund, 84

Alice H. Mund, 84, of Lewes, Del., passed away peacefully Sunday, March 10, 2013, at her residence. She was well cared for by Compassionate Care Hospice of Delmar. Mund was born June 4, 1928, in New Haven, Conn., daughter of the late Allen Jackson and Kate (Boles) Hill.

Mund grew up in Dalton, Mass., and graduated from Dalton High School in 1946, where she was voted Most Sophisticated, Best Dressed and Best Athlete. She met her future husband, Henry A. Mund Jr., while working at Eastover Resort in Massachusetts. They moved to Dallas, Texas, shortly before they wed. The newly married couple then moved to East Hampton, N.Y., where they raised three children.

Mund volunteered many hours to the American Cancer Society, the local Republican Party, Guild Hall and the Ladies Village Improvement Society (LVIS), which she joined in 1955. Mund presided over the gate at the annual fair each year and garnered the most contributions ever recorded. She was also a founding member of Friends of Guild Hall in 1973. She went to work for Mark, Fore & Strike department stores in the 1980s and was a manager before retiring 14 years later. Mund’s career path didn’t end there; she became director of the East Hampton COC for several years before her final retirement.

Mund’s volunteerism extended past her retirement as she returned to one of her most dedicated passions, the LVIS and chaired the Bargain Box for more than seven years. With dedication, energy and retail experience, she transformed the Bargain Box into a clean, organized and very profitable thrift store. It became the “hot spot” of East Hampton. She was hard-working, “slow but steady,” as she used to say, and always cheerful. Her humor and sage advice endeared her to all the members who worked alongside her.

Mund enjoyed gardening, walks on the beach collecting beach glass, being with her friends and, most of all, spending time with her grandsons, who were the apples of her eye. She was a lady of the greatest generation, a lady who lived through good times and tumultuous times and personal trials, but always did so with grace, style and good humor.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and great and loyal friend who left her mark on all those with whom she came in contact. “Death is harder on those left behind, but remember the good times and the funny times and laugh about those,” as that would be the advice Alice would give.
In addition to her parents, Mund was preceded in death by her brother, Richard “Dick” Hill. She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Henry A. Mund Jr.; her son, Henry A. Mund III and his wife,

Nancy, of Alna, Maine; two daughters, Kate L. Mund of Amagansett, N.Y., and Lauren L. Mund of Lewes; three grandsons, Daniel Mund and his wife, Lindsey, Nathan Mund and Travis Loschen; and her brother, James Hill, his wife, Lorraine, and their children, Marsha Hopping, Charles Hill and Peter Hill.

Whether coaching tee-ball or traveling team events, Callahan never missed a blink. In his free time he enjoyed traveling, cruises, the beach, weekend trips to Ocean City, Md., and card night with the boys, where he was best known as “Julio.”

Callahan leaves behind a legacy of excellence in knowledge, care and passion for the horse industry, which his daughter, Amber, takes great pride in carrying on. He was so proud of her and so excited for her to take the reins and train their new foal coming in a month. Callahan will be remembered for his love of life, as a loving husband, father, son, brother, caretaker and dear friend who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Callahan is survived by his parents; his loving and devoted wife of 27 years, Robin A. (Myers) Callahan; two daughters, Amber and Megan Callahan; his brother, David Craig Callahan of Centreville, Md.; and his prized race horse, Rare Return N, who he came out of retirement to drive in their last career race, which ended in victory.

A celebration of Callahan’s life will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2013, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Callahan residence, at 14989 Butterfly Lane in Bridgeville, Del. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Hardesty Chapel, in Bridgeville. In lieu of flowers, the family suggested memorial contributions be made to Delaware Hospice; 100 Patriots Way; Milford, DE 19963. Condolences may be sent online at www.parsellfuneralhomes.com.
