The Coastal Point covers news and events in Bethany Beach, South Bethany, Fenwick Island, Ocean View, Millville, Frankford, Selbyville and Dagsboro, Del., as well as the larger area of southeastern Sussex County, from the Delaware state line north to the Indian River Inlet and from the coast inland to Millsboro.

Our focus is truly local, with local reporters attending nearly all official meetings in each of our towns, as well as following news and events in the area’s non-incorporated communities.

Wichmann censured despite support

Ocean View Town Council voted 3-2 on Tuesday to censure Bill Wichmann, despite overwhelming public support shown for the councilman at the meeting. Mayor Gary Meredith cast the deciding vote to censure Wichmann for 12 charges related to the violation of town procurement codes, organizing a cover-up and threatening a town employee.

Rental tax ordinance introduced in town

Ocean View Town Council introduced an ordinance on Tuesday that would implement a rental tax in the town, but council members worried about its enforcement. The tax would charge landlords 3 percent of gross rental receipts but would likely also translate into higher rental rates within Ocean View.

Weichmann facing censure motion

About a week after learning of Ocean View Town Councilman Roy Thomas’ intentions to censure fellow Councilman Bill Wichmann, Town Manager Kathy Roth sent a memo to Mayor Gary Meredith and Council, stating she that feels threatened by comments Wichmann allegedly made in a phone conversation.

Young owl finds home

Encounters with deer, snakes and foxes are all too common for residents of Savannah’s Landing, a planned community bordering wetlands and located in Ocean View. But over the past month, members of this community have come face-to-face with a different kind of animal altogether — a baby great horned owl.

Delp, Romero die from accident injuries

Dagsboro resident Robert Delp died last Thursday night from injuries sustained in a June 8 Frankford-area accident that killed four others and injured three.
Delp was taken off of life support at a Washington hospital about 5:41 p.m. on June 29, according to Delaware State Police spokesman Master Cpl. Jeff Oldham.

CHEER receives some help from state

The Sussex County Senior Services organization CHEER received a 5.5 percent increase from the state this year in the Grant-in-Aid bill, which “will help,” according to CHEER Deputy Director John Culp, but doesn’t solve the problem with a possible cut in services.
