IR sets the stage for future of boys' basketball

Writers generally use words to make a point. But, for once, the numbers alone can tell the tale of what kind of season the Indian River High School boys’ basketball team had. This year, the Indians finished with a 10-10 record — an even record, but winning more than they have in the past three years.

Twin siblings often have a special bond, but sisters Keeonya and Keiosha Shelton did something truly magical when both scored their 1,000th career-point at the girls’ basketball game on Feb. 15. They made athletic history — just like their mother, Sabrina Shelton, did many years ago at Indian River High School.

Knight breaks 1,000 points, IR breaks 100

Indian River High School was meant to smash records this week. The IR boys’ basketball team hit the road Feb. 19 to avenge their two-point loss to Seaford earlier this season. They came back with a vengeance and a mission, eventually winning 101-86.

River Soccer Social offers fun for adults, benefits children

River Soccer Club is hosting a night of dinner, dancing and fun on Saturday, Feb. 23, to benefit its youth soccer programs.

The first annual River Soccer Club Social is open to guests 21 or older because adult beverages will be served, including beer and wine. Mio Fratello restaurant will cater dinner, with a menu including ziti, meatballs, bruschetta and vegetables.

River Soccer schedules spring signups

Kids with a little cabin fever can start planning for spring as River Soccer Club begins registration for outdoor soccer this week. Boys and girls ages 4 to 15 can join recreational co-ed teams, which play on Saturdays for an eight-week season, beginning April 13.

MS boys’ basketball finishes season on the big court

Selbyville Middle School’s boys’ basketball team got to play in the big league for a day, joining Indian River High School for a Sussex Central showdown on Jan. 31. In a display of present and future IR talent, IR varsity and JV hosted Central, while SMS faced Georgetown Middle School.

Knight signs to Delaware State University

Marquel Knight has officially closed his football career at Indian River High School by opening a new chapter, at Delaware State University. Surrounded by family, coaches and teammates in the IR library Feb. 13, Knight signed a letter of intent to join the DSU Hornets in the fall of 2013.

Lady Indians shine in the 4th quarter against rival Delmar

When the Indian River girls’ basketball team hit the road to Delmar on Jan. 29, they faced serious competition. Not only was Delmar preparing for a grudge match — having lost three weeks earlier at IR, 70-44 — but their star player was aiming to break a 1,000-career-point record.

The Indians weren’t upset because they lost to Delmar on Jan. 29. They were upset because they didn’t feel they really got to play, eventually falling on their own turf, 62-74.

Kilby named soccer Coach of the Year

The Indian River boys’ soccer team won second place in the 2012 state tournament — an all-time high for the team — and now head coach Steve Kilby has earned official recognition from his peers, being named Coach of the Year by Delaware High School Boys Soccer Coaches Association.

The Indian River High School girls and boys felt the side-effects when they lost to Cape Henlopen on Jan. 14 and put up only half a team against Stephen Decatur on Jan. 8. Seaford suffered more, barely filling the lanes when IR won against them Jan. 10.
